Spring travel season is here—which means it’s time to prep your pup for a fun, low-stress stay at the pet resort.

Here at Better K9 Pet Resort (Riverside & Corona), dogs enjoy clean, climate-controlled lodging, supervised play, and a consistent, supervised routine.

Use this owner-friendly guide to make drop-off smooth and your dog’s boarding stay a breeze.

The Essentials (Pack These First)

Think of this section as the must-haves, non-negotiables, and all-around “can’t do withouts.” These items help the team care for your dog exactly the way you do at home, minimizing stress and keeping routines consistent.

1) Pre-Portioned Food (clearly labeled)

  • Measure each meal into sealed bags or small containers.
  • Label with your dog’s name, AM/PM, and date.
  • Include written feeding instructions (mix-ins, warm water, etc.).

Why it matters: Keeping diet consistent helps prevent tummy upset and supports a calm transition.

2) Medications (original containers)

  • Bring meds in the original bottle/box with the prescription label.
  • Add a printed dosage schedule and note any “give with food” requirements.
  • Pack meds separately from food so staff can verify and log administration.

3) Vaccination Records

Be sure to have proof on hand that your dog is current on their shots. Better K9 requires rabies and Bordetella and recommends canine influenza.

A quick photo or PDF backup on your phone is smart in case you need it at check-in.

4) Collar, Leash, & ID

Your dog’s everyday collar with a current ID tag and microchip info on file is ideal. Also, a sturdy leash makes hand-off safe and streamlined.

5) Emergency Contacts

Be sure to provide a list of reliable contacts (including primary phone numbers) who can make decisions if you’re unreachable.

Your veterinarian’s name and phone number are also musts for the front desk staff.

Nice-to-Haves (Pack if it Helps Your Pup)

You don’t need to bring much for your dog’s boarding stay with Better K9. Our team provides the basics and more. Still, a few familiar touches can make your dog feel right at home.

6) Comfort Item (optional)
Bedding and toys are provided, so you don’t have to bring anything. If your dog settles best with a familiar scent, however—say, a small blanket or T-shirt from home—these can offer great comfort. Just be sure to label it clearly and forego irreplaceable items.

7) Treats & Training Notes
A small bag of your dog’s usual treats plus a card listing cues your dog knows (“sit,” “place,” release word, etc.) can be a big help. Consistency reduces stress and keeps manners sharp.

What Not to Pack

When in doubt, less is often more. Resorts maintain safety and sanitation standards that work best with their own gear and cleaning routines.

So, please leave the following at home:

  • Large beds, bulky crates, or ceramic bowls (facilities provide what’s safest and easiest to sanitize).
  • Rawhides or easily splintered chews (choose safer alternatives like your pup’s regular, staff-approved chews).
  • Irreplaceable toys/blankets (opt for something you won’t mind getting a little extra love).

Pro Tips to Reduce Stress (for Pets and People)

A few small habits make a big difference. These simple tips help your dog settle quickly and give you peace of mind while you’re away.

  • Label everythingDog’s name + your last name on food, treats, meds, and comfort items.
  • Share the routine. Hand staff a quick one-pager: meal times, potty signals, favorite games, calming cues, and any quirks.
  • Time the last meal. Feed a light meal 2–3 hours before the drive to avoid car tummy upset.
  • Arrive a little early. Give yourself extra minutes for check-in, vaccination verification, and questions.
  • Keep goodbyes upbeat. Dogs read your energy. Cheerful, calm hand-offs set the tone for a great stay.
  • Consider a practice night. If it’s your dog’s first boarding experience, a one-night trial helps them (and you) get comfortable before a longer trip.

Spring Travel Pre-Flight: A Simple Timeline

Working backward from departure keeps things calm. Here’s an easy timeline to follow.

  • One week out: Confirm reservation and vaccine status. Start pre-portioning food and refill prescriptions if needed.
  • Two days out: Pack the bag; print feeding/med instructions and emergency contacts. Decide on one small comfort item (optional).
  • The night before: Attach ID tag, check microchip info on file, set aside leash and collar. Place all meds in original containers in a separate labeled pouch.
  • Day of drop-off: A light meal, a quick bathroom break, and bring everything labeled. Stay positive—your dog is in good hands.
